Thjorsardalur valley, in upper part of southern Iceland, was the home of the early settlers during the Old Commonwealth. In 1104 the valley was buried under a thick layer of tephra (volcanic ash) from Mt. Hekla. Some 40 buildings have been escavated in the valley.
