Kópavogur is the second-largest town of Iceland with a population of 28,000. It lies south of Reykjavík and is a part of the greater Reykjavík area. It is largely made up of residential areas.

Kópavogur is historically significant as the site of the 1662 Kópavogur meeting which marked the total incorporation of Iceland into Denmark-Norway.
