Heiðmörk was proclaimed a municipal conservation area in 1950, today totaling 2,800 acres. It is located southeast of Elliðavatn, Iceland and is about 10 km from the center of Reykjavík.

More than 4 million trees have been planted since 1950 and the most prominent one is the Sitka Spruce.
